Area Overview

Chillicothe and Ross County is located in the foothills of southern Ohio and is best known as the First Capital of Ohio. What many people don't realize is that Chillicothe/Ross County has history that dates back to 200 B.C. with the prehistoric Hopewell Culture. The Hopewell Culture built magnificent, geometrical earthworks that were used for their gatherings and celebrations and is now part of the National Park Service. In addition to our National Park, Ross County offers visitors five State Parks that feature miles of trails, boating, swimming, and plenty more outdoor recreation.

Showcasing Chillicothe and Ross County's heritage include Adena Mansion & Gardens, Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, Tecumseh Outdoor Drama, Ross County Heritage Center, Dr. John Harris Dental Museum, and Lucy Hayes Heritage Center.

There are several hotels, bed & breakfasts and cabin options to fit every travelers needs all within minutes of the areas attractions, dining, shopping and historic downtown.

Recreation & Fitness













Chillicothe and Ross County offers over 120 miles of trails for hiking and biking while enjoying the great outdoors and the scenic southern Ohio landscape. There are plenty of outdoor recreation areas that allow fishing and hunting for the outdoor enthusiasts.

Throughout the year, many of the communities in Ross County offer special events and festivals to keep residents and visitors entertained. The first festival of the season takes place in May and the final one is in October.

Downtown Chillicothe offers the perfect setting for exploring the shops and local flavor of the area, but many of the communities in Ross County offer a variety of shopping, antiques, and restaurants for great food.

Cultural Activities





You can find our local art gallery in Yoctangee Park in downtown Chillicothe. It is housed within the original Water Works building and was restored to create the Pump House Center for the Arts that has exhibits year-round.

The Majestic Theatre located in Chillicothe and the Paxton Theatre in Bainbridge offers concerts, plays, movies and many other events throughout the year. The Majestic Theatre hosts annual concerts from Phil Dirt and the Dozers and country music's John Berry, with the Paxton Theatre showcasing local and regional talent during their Paint Valley Jamboree series.

Attractions






Ross County offers a wide variety of historical sites. Tour a 19th century mansion that was the home of Thomas Worthington who is known as "Father of Ohio Statehood." Along the tour of the mansion you will learn about life in 1800s. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park offers visitors the opportunity to see earthworks that were created by the ancient, prehistoric Hopewell Culture that date back to 200 B.C. The Ross County Heritage Center showcases Chillicothe's heritage all in one location with antique vehicles, Native American artifacts, Camp Sherman memorabilia and much more. During your stay you can also tour the birthplace of Lucy Webb Hayes, who is known as the first, First Lady of the White House and also as "Lemonade Lucy."
There are plenty of area attractions that will keep you busy and exploring the past!

Summer and fall.

Summers are sunny, warm and perfect for outdoor recreation in the State Parks and National Park. You'll find the weather just right for swimming and boating. During the Fall, the scenic foothills that surround Ross County explode with autumn color.
