Things to Do

Recreation & Fitness

Moore County’s sandy soil has long been a powerful draw for horse enthusiasts. From steeplechases to dressage, there are all kinds of events to keep spectators busy. And for those not content to let others have all the fun, there are plenty of places to get out and gallop. A few of our larger attractions include the McLendon Hills Equestrian Center, and the 4,000-acre Walthour-Moss Foundation land preserve.

As the Home of American golf, you should expect Moore County to offer access to some incredible courses—and that’s definitely the case. Having hosted several US Open Golf Championships, most anyone with a set of clubs knows we’re home to the world-famous Pinehurst Resort with nine outstanding options for all skill levels. But in addition, Moore County has 30 other incredible courses that keep residents guessing and visitors coming back.

With a name like the Sandhills, you might not expect to find many lakes, maybe not even any lakes. But as with many things, Moore County is a bit unexpected. For water lovers like fisherman, kayakers, wake boarders and sunbathers, there are dozens of lakes with an incredible range of shapes and sizes. Not all allow powerboats, but that’s actually a really good thing!

Cultural Activities

From visual and performing arts to theater and film, our area boasts a thriving arts community. The Arts Council of Moore County organizes events ranging from art galleries to musicals to jazz concerts by world-renowned musicians. Film connoisseurs frequent the Sunrise Theater, which showcases independent films. And for the musically inclined, check out the The Carolina Philharmonic, a local symphonic orchestra with a wide stylistic range that includes favorites like Bach and Beethoven. The Carolina Philharmonic is also a Carnegie Hall Link Up partner in bringing music education to 3-5th grade students. Celebrating its fifth year, the Palustris Arts Festival provides performances and exhibits featuring the visual, literary and performing arts. The festival is suitable for the whole family with three days of events.
